Research consistently shows that young African and Caribbean men are more likely to face negative experiences when using mental health services, which means they have poorer mental health as a result.
Running from 2013-2015, 300 Voices was a working partnership between Time to Change, Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and the West Midlands Police. It focussed on reducing the stigma and discrimination that can exist in statutory mental health settings and the police.
The project brought together staff from mental health services, the police, young African and Caribbean men with experience of mental health problems, and also a host of community organisations and representatives, to constructively explore how to improve the experience of using mental health services.
The focus was on empowering young African Caribbean men to share their experience of mental health support.
The project has also produced the 300 Voices Toolkit that that explains the approaches that were used in the project, and provides the practical tools necessary to roll it out elsewhere.
MASH was initially developed as a part of the Time to Change 300 Voices Project to support young African and Caribbean men with lived experience of mental health problems in Birmingham.
