About Us

MASH delivers services that provide support, safe spaces, friendship and the exploration of positive options for its participants.

Where did it all begin for the hub?

The Mentoring & Advocacy Support Hub (MASH), previously known as the Peer Support Programme, was initially developed by Tippa Naphtali as part of the 300 Voices Project to support young African and Caribbean men with lived experience of mental health in Birmingham to build resilience and aid recovery.

This was expected to involve relevant training and ongoing support to enable network members to support each other’s mental wellbeing. In addition, the work would establish links and relationships with local organisations where support and relevant contributions could be brokered to support the men involved in the project.

How MASH evolved!

The programme model was developed with reference to Mind’s objective in its 2012–2016 strategy, which stated, “Everyone in England and Wales with mental health problems [should be able to] access peer support by 2016.”

Following the end of Phase 2 of the 300 Voices Project, The Peer Support Programme secured funding from the Police and Crime Commissioner's Office for a further year to March 2017.

The next chapter!

In 2019 / 2020 our parent organisation, Catalyst 4 Change CIC, pledged to step up its fundraising for long term funding for our engagement activities. This is now beginning to bear fruits!

MASH was extended in 2016 to primarily support African and Caribbean women as well as men aged 18+ with lived experience and the age-range now covers any participant of working age. Find out about our support activities here >

Ultimately our services are geared towards building greater confidence and resilience, and the ability to function within society despite any ongoing mental health or wellbeing support needs.

Additionally, in 2020  The National Lottery Community Fund  developed the Leaders with Lived Experience Pilot Programme  supporting organisations set up or run by people with first-hand experience of a social issue, who are trying to create positive change for communities and people who share those experiences.
